Hi there!

During this lesson we're going to learn how to give instructions and details with precision.

You might want to watch the video lesson about prepositions of place first to help you understand this lesson more easily, but if you feel ready then all you need to do is get a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil.

Now try to understand the instructions and then do each one before I do!

First of all, turn the sheet of paper horizontally.
Turn the sheet of paper horizontally.

Next, draw a circle in the middle of the sheet.
Draw a circle in the middle of the sheet.
Now, divide the circle into four equal sections by a verticle cross.

Then, in the top right-hand section, draw a triangle with one of its points facing downwards.

Then, in the bottom left-hand section, draw a verticle rectangle.
In the bottom left-hand section, draw a verticle rectangle.

Now write today's date in numbers at the header of the sheet, in the middle.

Then write a percentage symbol in the top left-hand corner of the sheet.

Next, write a euro, a dollar, and a pound symbol at the footer of the page, in the middle.
Write a euro, a dollar, and a pound symbol at the footer of the page, in the middle.

Then, in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet, think of whatever it is that you like doing most for fun, and then write it vertically, from bottom to top.

In the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet, write the name of what your favourite hobby, vertically, from bottom to top.

Finally, tear off the top, right-hand corner of the sheet.
Tear off the top, right-hand corner of the sheet.

Ok, so now that you've finished the excercise, let's take a look at what you should have on your sheet of paper.

So first, I said: hold the sheet of paper horizontally.
So what you need to do is this.
Then I said: draw a circle in the middle of the sheet.
I didn't specify any size at all, so you can make the circle any size you like.
Next, I said: divide the circle into four equal sections by a verticle cross.
So you need to do this.
If I'd just said: divide the circle into four sections by a cross then you could have done this, or this, but as I said: divide the circle into four equal sections by a verticle cross, then you needed to do this.
By the way, this is actually called a pie chart which is used to show different percentages in statistics.
After that, I said: in the top right-hand section, draw a triangle with one of its points facing downwards.
So you need to do this.
Next, I said: in the bottom left-hand section, draw a verticle rectangle.
Like this.
Then I said: write today's date in numbers at the header of the sheet, in the middle.
So you need to do this.
Then I said: write a percentage symbol in the top left-hand corner of the sheet.
So you need to write it here.
Next, I said: write a euro, a dollar, and a pound symbol at the footer of the page, in the middle.
So you need to write it here.
Then I said: in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet, think of whatever it is that you like doing most for fun, and then write it vertically, from bottom to top.
As, I like doing photography, I can either write it like this, or like this, and both are correct as I only told you to write the word vertically, from bottom to top, but I didn't say: sideways, or with each letter vertically above the other.
Finally, I said: tear off the top, right-hand corner of the sheet, so you need to do this.

So, now that you know how to give instructions, try finding some new friends on GoSpeakEnglish and do a different exercise with them to see if they understand you correctly!

And that's the end of this lesson!

Now you can see if you've understood the video, and do the test on GoSpeakEnglish. You can also watch many other English video lessons on GoSpeakEnglish.

Thanks, and I hope to see you again soon!
