Hi there!

During this lesson we're going to learn how to talk about finding accommodation - a room, an apartment or a flat.

Only the word apartment is used in American English, but in British English both words apartment and flat can be used.

So you're about to go and stay in another country, or you've just arrived there and you need to find somewhere to live.

Here's the situation:
Dave has seen an advert online about an apartment which interests him, so he makes a phone call to ask for some more details.

Dave who is the potential Tenant calls the Landlady, or House owner, Cathy, and her phone starts ringing...

Now let's take a look at their conversation:

Hello, Cathy speaking.

Hi there, I'm calling about the advert for the apartment near Old Brompton Road; is it still available?

Yeah it's still free at the moment.

Ah good! Could you give me some more information about it?

Sure! It's a nice light apartment just off Old Brompton Road, and it's really close to the West Brompton tube station. It's got 2 bedrooms, a single and a double, then there's a large living room, a small kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower.

Ok it sounds like just what I'm looking for! Does the bathroom also have a bathtub or just the shower?

It's quite a narrow bathroom so there isn't really any space to put a bath in, but the shower is quite large.

Ok, and is there an Internet connection already in the apartment?

Yeah there is actually, it's WiFi and it's even included in the rent!

Great, that's perfect! So how much is the rent?

It's really good value actually, just one thousand, two hundred and fifty pounds per month, including all bills and the WiFi Internet. Then there's a deposit which is the equivalent of 2 months rent.

Alright, that sounds reasonable. So when could I come to see it?

I'd better let you know that there are quite a few people interested in taking it, so do you think you'd be able to come and see it soon?

Ah ok. Would it be ok if I come this Sunday at about half past three?

Yeah that shouldn't be a problem.

Great! I'll see you on Sunday then! Thanks again for your time. Bye!

That's ok, see you on Sunday! Bye!

So, that was an example of a phone call between a potential tenant and a landlady or house owner.

Happy house hunting!

And that's the end of this lesson!
