Hi there!

During this lesson we're going to learn how to pronounce words which contain the letters: ch.

There are 2 different pronunciations of Ch; the soft sounding ch and the hard sounding ch.

Here are some examples with the soft sounding ch:

Chin
Cheers
Chips
Chat
Chapter
Couch
Itch
Much
Peach
Scratch

And here are some examples with the hard sounding ch:

Chemist
Christmas
Chrome
Choir
Chorus
Ache
Architect
Psychologist
Stomach
Technical

Generally speaking if the ch is followed by a vowel, or if the ch is at the end of a word, then the sound is soft, with the exception of words of scientific, religious, or Latin origin which are pronounced with a hard ch sound.

Ch followed by a consonant is always a hard sound.

So, now that you know how to pronounce the letters ch, try chatting with some cheerful new friends on GoSpeakEnglish to check which chorus line they like best in the music charts, and even to ask if they've ever sung in a choir at Christmas!

And that's the end of this lesson!

Now you can see if you've understood the video, and do the test on GoSpeakEnglish. You can also watch many other English video lessons on GoSpeakEnglish.

Thanks, and I hope to see you again soon!
