Hi there!

During this lesson we're going to learn how to talk about the weather.

This is quite important because people in Britain talk about the weather a lot as it's a safe subject to talk about and there's no risk of offending anyone.

It can also be a good ice-breaker which is something which people can say or do to break a cold situation; a situation in which something friendly or funny needs to happen, in order for people to feel more comfortable with each other before they meet or before they get to know each other better.

When you talk about the weather you don't need to start by saying: the weather today, because all you need to say is: It's hot today. In this case, the word: it's, refers to the weather, so that's all you need to say.

So here are some ways of describing the weather.

Let's begin with some bad weather expressions, and gradually move on to some good weather expressions:

It's absolutely freezing today so you need to wear warm clothes!

It's brass monkeys; my hands are really cold!
There was a lot of frost on the grass this morning, it was all white and crunchy!
Bit nippy today, eh?! Depending on how you say this expression, it can either mean that the weather's quite cold, or that it's really cold.
It's below zero today. This means that the temperature is minus a few degrees centigrade.
It's much cooler in the shade than in the direct sunlight.
I heard that there's a blizzard on the way so we'd better shut all the windows so that the snow doesn't blow in to our house.
It looks like it's going to snow soon, but it's not very cold so it probably won't lie on the ground.
It's been snowing all day so tomorrow we'll be able to build a snowman!
The mountains are quite snowy now so the skiing's fantastic!
We're in for hail tomorrow so you'd better park your car in the garage.
The hailstones are as big as golf balls!
There's black ice on the roads tonight, so when you drive back home you'll have to be careful not to skid.
It's only sleet, so it's too wet to lie on the roads.
I think the rain's on its way here, because those big, black clouds are coming towards us.
It doesn't look like it's going to stop raining so we won't be able to go to the beach today.
It's raining cats and dogs!
It's peeing down!
I saw on the news that there were serious floods in the south, and cars were floating along the roads which were flooded like rivers.
Some storms are so violent that they can blow the roofs off houses.
Did you hear the thunder and lightning last night?! It was really loud.
There are going to be light showers on and off, all day so you might want to take an umbrella with you.
It's only drizzling so you don't really need your umbrella.
The fog's so dense that you can't even see your hand in front of your face!
It was really foggy this morning, but the sun burned it off in the afternoon.
There's a bit of mist up in the hills today so the landscape looks quite mysterious.
It's all grey and miserable today, but the sun should come out tomorrow.
The clouds are really dark and heavy right now.
It's just a bit cloudy so we'll still be able to have a barbecue.
It's quite gusty today isn't it?! The leaves are blowing around all over the place!
It's blowing a gale!
I heard that there are gale force winds over in the west!
The hurricane wrecked all the boats in the harbour yesterday.
Bit breezy today eh!? Once again it depends on how you say this expression; it could mean that there's a slight breeze, but it could also mean that there's a really strong wind.
There's a nice cool breeze today which is great because the sun's very hot.
What strange weather we've been having lately! You don't know what kind of clothes to put on in the morning.
It's been on and off all day, but they say it's not going to rain at all tomorrow!
It finally decided to rain so the farmers will be happy for their fruit and vegetables which really needed some water.
It's not rained for ages so I think there's going to be a drought this year.
Oh look! There's an amazing rainbow over there!
The sun's trying its best to come out!
It looks as if it's going to open up later, so we might be able to go for a picnic.
It looks as if it might clear up soon, so maybe we'll be able to go for a walk.
They said that there are going to be some sunny spells next week, so hopefully it's going to rain less.
The weather man said that it's going to be sunny all weekend.
Nice day for it, eh?!
?Lovely day, isn't it?!
It's nice and warm today.
It's pretty close today isn't it? I'm sweating so much that I've had to change my shirt twice already!
You can also say: It's really hot and sticky today!
It's in the high thirties today. This means that the temperature is above thirty degrees centigrade.
It's boiling hot today!
It was so hot yesterday that you could have fried an egg on the pavement!
It's absolutely roasting today; it's like being in an oven!
It's a scorcher today!, or you can also say: It's scorching today!

Sometimes it's quite funny to use understatements to talk about extreme weather conditions as it shows we have an optimistic and friendly personality.
For example if it's really cold and the temperature is minus twenty degrees centigrade, you could smile and say to another person: Bit nippy today, eh?!.

So now that you know how to talk about the weather, try finding some new friends on GoSpeakEnglish and ask them if it's sunny, rainy, or snowy in their country today!

And that's the end of this lesson!

Now you can see if you've understood the video, and do the test on GoSpeakEnglish. You can also watch many other English video lessons on GoSpeakEnglish.
